The day comes faster than you think — one minute you’re snapping their first-day-of-kindergarten photo, the next you’re moving them into a dorm room. Sending your child to college is exciting, but it’s also emotional (for both of you!). The good news? There are simple ways to stay connected and make this transition a little easier.
1. The Thoughtful Care Package (with a Twist)
A classic care package is always appreciated, but you can take it to the next level by making it personal and practical. Instead of just snacks and instant noodles, consider creating a “Gift Card Album”:
Print out our free 4x6 care package notes
Attach a gift card to each one (coffee, takeout, streaming, etc.)
Slip them into a cheap photo album so they have encouragement to flip through all semester
Each card says, “For when…” — like For when you need a brain break (Playstation), or For when you need a break from the dining hall (Panera). It’s like sending love from home, one card at a time.
2. Gift Cards That Go the Distance
Want to keep it even simpler? A stash of gift cards they can use anytime is a lifesaver for college students. Some favorites:
Food: Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Domino’s, Insomnia Cookies
Coffee: Starbucks, Dunkin’
Essentials: Target, Amazon
Fun: Spotify, Xbox, Steam
Tip: Mix practical with fun so they have options for both needs and little treats.
3. Easing the Transition for You (and the Rest of the Family)
Dropping them off isn’t just hard on them — it’s an adjustment for you and everyone at home too.
Create a new routine: Fill your days with something to look forward to (walks, coffee dates, hobbies, work projects).
Set communication expectations: Decide how often you’ll text or FaceTime. Give them space while still staying connected. Maybe even have some set schedules to start.
Plan a first visit: Even if it’s weeks away, it helps to have it on the calendar.
Support siblings: Younger kids may feel the loss too — involve them in care packages so they feel included. Encourage the college kid to reach out - write out the text for them so they just have to hit send... schedule your FaceTime call for when the littles are around and able to talk too.
4. Remember: You’re Still Their Safe Place
No matter how independent they seem, knowing you’re cheering them on means everything. Whether it’s a late-night text, a surprise Venmo for pizza, or a care package full of love, those little gestures keep you close, even when miles apart.
Send them off with something special — grab our free printable College Care Package Notes and start putting together a gift that will keep them smiling long after move-in day.
And take a deep breath, mama. They’ve got this. And so do you.
